Goodbye From The Weather Guy

Those of you who have watched my work on 10 News or CBS 8 during the past 30 years probably know my true passions are nature, gardening and the environment. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to report on those things in addition to keeping people informed on weather changes. During the months of time when San Diego weather rarely changes day to day, it’s been nice to have the additional subject matter to keep things interesting for me, and hopefully you.

I’ve decided to launch my second career now and focus all my energy on those things where my passion lies. The name of my company is still in the works but the direction is coming into focus. The most pressing environmental need is for water conservation, and to that end I am starting a company which will take advantage of technological advances in how we irrigate our lawns and gardens. New products allow me to offer customers a nearly 50% reduction in the amount of water they use outside their homes and do it without a loss of quality in the look of their plantings, with a fairly simple retrofit. We’ll also be installing rainwater harvesting systems.
Additionally I hope to have my organic gardening show Garden Rx on the air in San Diego soon, and then develop gardening products to make common chores a little easier and friendly to the environment.

It has been a remarkable pleasure to work on TV in my adopted home town. When I arrived here as a kid in my mid-twenties, I envisioned it as a stop on a career I hoped would take me to Washington D.C. as a Whitehouse correspondent. When Susie and I took the next step on that journey and moved to San Francisco to anchor the news, I immediately knew I’d made a mistake. San Diego had become more than a stop on a career train. The city, the region, and its people had become part of who I was (and am) and how I hoped to live and raise a family. When I was offered a chance to return as a weatherman, I jumped at the opportunity. You’ve all been remarkably kind and welcoming to me over the years and its important that you know how much I appreciate it.

I’ll be gone from ABC 10 soon, but I’ll remain in San Diego for as long as you’ll have me. Thanks again for all the memories and making me realize that home really is where the heart is.

In the near future you’ll be able to find me at www.lorennancarrow.com I look forward to seeing you there.

  3. WOW, it’s not gonna be the same without you on TV regularly!! Hope you can bring your great insight, ideas, and commentary to another venue ASAP!

Sign me up for your watering system stuff as well, I have been working towards drip irrigation or something similar for a while but don’t have much local info about the options. I have 2 4×8 raised beds, 2 3×12 in-ground beds, and a few fruit trees. Anything to lower the water needs of the edibles would be welcome, and I am really trying to plant more of my available space with edibles!

Thank you for your years of work at 10 News and all the great thoughts you have shared over the years, I am looking forward to your next venture!

  4. Loren-
You have been so much more than a weather guy! Yes, you helped me decide what I should wear each day - and taught me what “virga” is, but more importantly, you have increased my awareness of local and global environmental issues. Thank you for being all things Loren.

  5. Loren, You will be missed greatly! My wife and I moved to Hawaii for a couple of years and I checked the Channel 10 website eveyday to see what you had to say and check the weather. Like you we realized that the Encinitas/Carlsbad area was home and moved back. Please let us know how to keep up on your new business, (who knows, I may come looking for a job, a retired guy like me needs something to do, helping the environment would be very rewarding).

I wish you all the best.

  6. Loren ,
God bless you in whatever you put your hand to . I have so enjoyed your garden tips and books. Who else is going to help me out with those pesky bugs or how to rid of them without using pesticides. And other ways to save money and the “enviroment”and “global warming” ugh.
But I think your still a cool dude .

  7. I will miss you Loren. You and Carol were some of the main reasons I watched the 10 news. I have followed you since channel 8. I have always always turned to you for advice on garden and household fixes. I hope on your new website you will still offer advice like you have. You have always offered much more than weather. Good luck on your ventures and I think that is a good place for you to go.

Guess we’ll just be left with your books and recipes for now until we meet again. Do what you love with passion and it will shine through…Our Best, Loren. Thanks!

  9. All of the good ones are leaving us. I grew up in San Diego, but moved away in 1991. I still would make it a point to watch the news broadcasts when I would vist. Now I go on the internet to keep up with what is going on in San Diego. I guess things must change but it still won’t be the same. Best Of Luck, and still your still to young to retire.

I was gobsmacked when I heard that you were moving from the news and starting a new career! I have been an avid watcher of 10 news because of you. We all know what the weather in San Diego is most likely going to be like, and like you stated, a weather man’s job in San Diego has to be one of the easiest jobs on Earth, but you made it so much more. I will truly miss your smiling face, your wonderfully educating stories on gardening, the environment, and conservation! I wish you the best of luck in your new adventures!

  23. Dear Loren,
I remember when you had an appt. with the Principal Scientist at SDSU/Systems Ecology Research Group (’85). At the time, they were working on field studies in the Alaskan tundra on the “Greenhouse Effect” (now Global Warming). Since the 2007 wildfires, I started a company to help people organize and preserve their critical documents and photos in case of evacuation or other emergency. Check out my website: wwww.grabngoportfolio.com. If I could save one family from devasting loss of their important papers and photos, I would be grateful. Best of luck to you–Shirley

I am totally bummed out that you won’t be doing the weather, giving us gardening tips and well, just being there. You have been my favorite weather man and it’s just not the same since you’ve gone. I think I never would have gotten rid of the moths in a box of cereal I brought home from the store had I not head you mentioning Pantry Pest. Thanks to that tip, I have NO moths. (yay!)
I wish you lots of luck with your new business and I am happy for you that you will be doing something you love. All the best to you and your family and if you ever decide to do the weather on nightly news again lots of lots of folks would be elated to see you!
    A fan of yours.

All of the wisdom you shared with us regarding the weather, our gardens, pests, even keeping our Christmas Trees alive longer. We can understand you wanting to follow your passion…It just seems odd that Channel 10 would let you go without giving us, your viewers, at least a couple of weeks notice. 37. Loren, I’ve watched you since the days when you did the surf skits and had a zinc oxide white nose! I am really going to miss you on TV, your reporting and sense of humor regarding how the weather seems to do the exact opposite of what has been forecast. Too bad that lady with the bad hair on the early morning news doesn’t have a sense of humor at all. Maybe her pregnancy will change that. I have saved her telephone and email messages to me in response to my comments regarding one of her totally incorrect forecasts. She said it was raining in Riverside and Orange Counties but not in San Diego County and wouldn’t rain here until later in the afternoon and I was looking out my Oceanside window watching it rain hard while she was stating this. I couldn’t help myself and had to email a comment to her. She really got upset that she was called on this! In the Navy we called Meteorologists, “Weather Guessers” an inaccurate science at best. ha! To me your most famous weather report was when you had been nailed for being repeatedly wrong and you stated words to the effect that today it might rain, then it might not or it might do this then it might do that, but regardless we will have weather! I have book marked your website and will follow you and continue to use your most excellent tips.

  44. Hi Loren,

What a great surprise to see your “new” direction!!! Congratulations! We’ve been watching you for years and share your gardening passion.

We have had a wonderful backyard organic garden 2 years in a row. Wish you could come see it! In the middle of Linda Vista in the San Diego soil we are producing bumper crops of yummy stuff…

I am trying to find out how to tell you *today* that the praying mantis egg cases we bought at the store are actually hatching right this moment. From what I understand it is a privilege to actually witness this since it happens fairly quickly and you can’t tell the difference in the egg case afterward. I am shooting as much video and photos as possible and would be glad to share with another bug and dirt enthusiast!
