Tell Us What You Think…
Two men are facing trouble for freeing a seal pup from a net wrapped around its neck.reported.
Seals are federally protected mammals and federal law requires a person to keep their distance from them. However, the men claim that the safety of the seal should supercede any legislation.
What do you think?

I AM SO HAPPY THAT THESE WONDERFUL COMPASSIONATE MEN FREED THE BABY SEAL. THEY SHOULD RECEIVE AN AWARD. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. SOME OF OUR LAWS ARE ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. THE LAW SHOULD AT LEAST ALLOW PROFESSIONALS TO SAVE THE SEALS IN SITUATIONS SUCH AS THIS. TO ME IT WAS A NO BRAINER TO QUIETLY CRAWL OUT AND FREE HIM. DUH.
May 9, 2008 at 1:13 pm
The fact that these two men “may” be facing charges is crazy. I’ve never heard of anyone going to jail because they were compassionate. They did what every San Diegan wanted to do. I understand that there are laws that should be followed; however, this was just an isolated event that NEEDED to be taken care of IMMEDIATELY!! I think that they are very courageous. I want to thank the two men that helped this poor pup from dying a slow death. I really hope they can just give these guys a warning. If not, I can’t even imagine the controversy from that action!!!
May 9, 2008 at 2:21 pm
If you have to break a law to save a life…go for it!
May 9, 2008 at 2:50 pm
I hope they don’t face any charges. These men are heros. I used to live oceanfront and saved seals and dolphins all the time. I had no idea it was against the law, even if I did, I would of still saved them. Who made that law anyways? The law need to be changed. Not all laws are good laws. Remember woman and blacks couldn’t vote at one time. That law changed because it was wrong. So is this law.
Thank you to the men that were brave and smart enough to do what was right.
May 9, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I was praying someone could save them who knows how too. If someone who should be in charge doesn’t help a baby seal with all the other interruptions they haft to put up with
——Go for it with God’s speed. The beach is their’s and should be respected at all times. Kid’s and people can always use another part of the beach or YMCA or other swiming area’s. We are crowing them out and littering which hurts them and this earth.Lets use our mind and heart. I will protest if anything is used against the two men. I wanted to but if they didn’t do it I would of done something I could not have let the sweet thing dieand I am glad it didn’t die of thrist.
May 9, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Good for you and God blesses you.
My hat is off to you
May 9, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I think that it is ludacris that there is a law in place that states that people are not allowed to help this defenseless seal and watch it die. Yet if it were a child on the beach, entangled, starving, and in possible danger, there would be no legal lines to cross in going to help that child. The government and several agencies always say they ‘were going to help’ or that ‘they have a plan of action in place’. The problem is though, by the time they take those ‘actions’ if any, it is usually too late, much harm has already been done to the physical and mental well being of the creature or individual and possible death. We the people, of sound mind and bodies, are just in doing the humane thing for all individuals or creatures on this green earth. For we the people have crossed upon their land and destroyed so much, and left them with so little they are dying off. We the people must take responsibility and action when and where it is needed when our god fearing government is standing on the sidelines. I amend these men. And should I ever see them, I will gladly shake their hand for taking action when action was needed.
May 9, 2008 at 4:02 pm
The Fact that HUMANS had to free the seal from a HUMAN made material is fair. this not a case of survival of the fittest for the seal, Man created the problem when his trash was entangled around a baby seal. The seal belongs in the ocean, not our trash.
May 9, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Stupid laws are enforced by stupid people who have a stupid plan to wait for the right
time to remove the net. There should be no further “investigation” on this. Let everyone and the seal get on with their lives……
May 9, 2008 at 4:09 pm
If the seal was being attacked by nature’s creatures, I agree they should not intercede, but to wait 3 days and know nothing was being done about a man made cause of danger was ludicrous and too difficult for the average Joe to ignore. If the others were scared, so what? They will come back. It stressed out too many humans.
May 9, 2008 at 4:10 pm
These two men did not interfer with nature. There was nothing natural about a net around a seals neck. This goes right up there with letting the city burn because those with the ability to help did not have “permission”. I will gladly contribute to a legal fund for these two if needed.
May 9, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I couldn’t agree with you more JC. A net around the baby seal was not nature but a man made problem. I am with you. I read an article where the powers that be said there were plans in progress. Why didn’t we hear about them? I will gladly picket the federal building if necessary and/or contribute to the legal fund if the men are arrested.

Below is the email address of the public contacts person for NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Fisheries division - the group tasked with enforcing the Marine Mammals Protection Act:
steve.meyers@noaa.gov
I suggest all of us in San Diego let Mr. Meyers know what we think about the possibility of charging our two San Diego seal rescuers with a crime. I personally would support and contribute to a legal defense fund or to pay any fine that these two gentlemen might receive.
However, being a “bureaucrat” myself, I would hope the bureaucrats in DC will use a little common sense and discretion in their decision as to whether or not to charge these two individuals. If seals were fragile creatures, they would not be as prolific as they are. These two men were very careful not to harm the seal, and to not let the seal harm them. This was not a rabid mountain lion, it was a baby seal. Two grown men with obvious sense were able to take it upon themselves and act when the bureaucrats couldn’t get their act together after three days! Let’s support them, and also let the feds know what we think about their possible interventions.
May 9, 2008 at 4:59 pm
That poor Seal Pup was caught in the fish net for over 4 days and suffered a great deal. I take my hat off to the wonderful brave people that took the initiative to step up and free the Seal. It was absolutely inhumane to leave the Seal in that condition by Seaworld and the Marine Fisheries dept.
May 9, 2008 at 5:05 pm
I would have done it!! It’s very inhumane to watch that baby and do nothing about it! Go after the drug dealers and leave these guys alone!!!!!! I support what they did 100%!!!! Good job guys!!!
May 9, 2008 at 5:26 pm
I believe the FEDS should be held accountabe for the indangement of an animal. Also if these to men face charges I will that ALL the media, both TV and Print. If it was just kept quiet it would have just gone away. I am so tired of the media overdoing it in the name of the big story. Enough already.
May 9, 2008 at 6:08 pm
I am so proud of the two men who rescued the baby seal. Instead of being arrested, they should have a medal pinned on them.
I can’t believe they will ever find 12 people who would convict them. They are the good guys so the Government should save their money & not bother them.
May 9, 2008 at 6:21 pm
lock these yahoos up in jail
May 9, 2008 at 6:27 pm
The Feds are the ones that should receive a fine, not the compassionate individuals that took that risk to save a life of a helpless animal. While the Feds are sitting around scratching their heads and wondering what plan they can come up with to free the seal, it is dying and they don’t care! I say, they need to get a life and get on with issues that impact the world and not worry about how they can punish someone for actually taking action without having to have 50 meetings to decide what action should be taken. Kudos to the men who saved the helpless baby seal!
May 9, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I believe more people should be more concerned about helping the poor manual’s, just like they want to help people in forgein country’s. I alson think the people who helped the baby seal should not be fined or charged.
May 9, 2008 at 6:34 pm
there’s nothing natural about dozen of seals lying on a beach
over populating because there protected from the elements and predators
that’s what’s not natural
May 9, 2008 at 6:37 pm
I was distraught when I saw this helpless, little pup with the netting around its neck. Dreadful, what we do to animals.
Certainly was not an act of nature. Even than help should have been extended.
Animals lovers are grateful to the two men who finally could not stand the ‘do-nothing’ stance of our local officals.
To fine these men for their compassionate action or even reprimand them is totally out of proportion.
May I also mentioned that the dispute over these harbor seals has been going on for a long time. I personally think, that these seals have a right to exist in their habitat.
We don’t own the ocean. Humans who respect and love animals, such as the two men who rescued that pup, should be rewarded.
My sincere thanks to them.
May 9, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Bravo! These men are heros! It made my day to know they had rescued the seal. The government should have used common sense when dealing with this sobering situation. The poor pup should have never had to suffer for 3 days.
If villians are needed, why not pursue the people who flush (chase) the seals into the ocean for the “fun” of it? I would enjoy reading a new article about their arrests.
May 9, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Bravo, Kathie - you felt the pulse of our government ..
They only shift stacks of papers from Right to Left and serve themselves first.

Seaworld & national marine fisheries are smart enough to know
That the possible death of one, is far better than having several be abandon and left to
Die. But all you people are so much smarter than people who do this for a living.
You all want the laws, but you don’t want them enforced if it doesn’t meet “your”
Standards. How do any of you know for sure that those two vigilantes (not heroes)
Didn’t just orphans 3 or 4 seals. THAT’S RIGHT YOU DON’T, THEY BROKE THE LAW AND SHOULD PAY

Public outcry will be heard across this country if the heroes who saved that seal’s life are fined or brought to justice in any way, and yes, they saved its life.
These 2 men deserve medals for what they did for an innocent creature who suffered needlessly because bureaucracy stood in the way. Thank goodness someone had the courage to do what needed to be done. Good grief, if the powers that be had taken their sweet time, the little seal would have died. What a thing to have on your conscience.
Bless both of you. We’re 100% behind you in what you did - if only there were more people like you in this world!!
May 9, 2008 at 6:52 pm
i cant believe i just read what you said about SEALS OVERPOPULATING? interesting answer considering how many BILLIONS OF PEOPLE are on this earth creating pollution, destroying wet lands, cutting down millions of trees, ever hear of global warning?? are you so selfish to ignore what your own species is doing to the earth and its oceans and its ok just because your one of them… talk about the pot calling the kettle
May 9, 2008 at 6:58 pm
It makes me sick that authorities are wasting their time investigating and considering charges against these wonderful angels that saved this poor baby seal. They deserve medals and compliments from the marine mammals groups and authorities for saving a baby seal that otherwise would die in front of our eyes.
There is lots and lots of real and serious crimes that need to be investigate and not a act of kindness. I thank these men very much for putting the baby seal safety and well being a priority instead of this laws. Thank you very much!!!
May 9, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Hi folks, I’m not from San Diego, but saw this on the CNN feed and thought I’d put my two cents in- If the Federal Fools are serious about prosecuting these “Good Samaritans” it just goes to show how well they can mess up ANY situation! These men saw the problem and did something about it, while the “Gubermint” Wildlife Officials dithered about with their “Studying the situation” and “Planning their Actions” (sounds like the wonderful work they did in New Orleans, Hmmm?) and by the time these officials would have managed to get anything done the poor animal would/could have died off of old age(or worse)! I say Hurray for these Heroes, and well done!

I agree. I went to the same beach one day last year. I saw 3 pups, 2 dead and one still alive (within the same day), all with fish nets and/or plastic 6-pack rings around their necks. The dieing one was struggling, and its mother was about 20 feet away yowling for it and flapping her flippers, to try to encourage it to come to her. It was weezing for breath and barely moving. I ran to the life guard station on the premise, as 3 people were inside, and they refused to do anything or call anyone, telling me that I would be arrested if I set foot on the sand!!!! It made me physically ill. It was something I still have nightmares about! I refuse to go back to the beach to this day, because of the insane and barbaric “human” compasion (lack of) given. The laws have to change, and change now!!
May 9, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Of course these 2 men did the right thing to free the baby seal. I’m 100% behind them. The government/powers that be, should get off their lazy behinds and go after real criminals. I’m surprised someone waited as long as they did to free the baby seal. Good job.
May 9, 2008 at 7:35 pm
With drug busts at SDSU, Robberies, stabbings of elderly women, who will be convicted? The men who saved the baby seals while those who could just sat on their hands and waited to see what would happen. The don’t disturb all to save one should not have appled. Doesn’t this teach our children not to help those in need, human or animal?
I too thank thses men for saving the seal.
May 9, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I think some laws are meant to be bent…how could anyone not help this baby!
May 9, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Oy, Sealsuck-
I’m pretty sure you haven’t a clue when it comes to compassion, but to use your own words: “How do know for sure that those two “DID” orphan 3 or 4 seals”. “THAT’S RIGHT YOU DON”T”
Try to be a bit more compassionate in the future hey?
May 9, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Every time the baby seal was shown on TV, I was near tears and thought why don’t the authorities help this baby that is a victim of man’s pollution and actions. This is just common sense. How can the professionals like Sea World or the marine fishery dept not pursue an exemption to help the baby seal? Shame on them! They should have figured out a way to help! I don’t think I will take my little grandson to Sea World anymore.
The 2 men should be honored as men who stood up and took action…..when the parties that should have helped the innocent baby seal stood by and did nothing. Thank you to them for doing the right thing. Press charges…….you have got to be kidding!!
May 9, 2008 at 8:18 pm
If we waste ONE tax dollar on trying to prosecute these men for saving the seal, those who order the investigation should be terminated immediately. These men did not harrass the seal pup or the others nearby. They simply performed an act of kindness at their own risk, then got the heck out of the way.
The so- called authorities obviously had some kind of problem coming up with a timely plan of action, while other citizens devised a plan and successfully freed the seal before it died.
Nice work to the guys who saved the seal. Unbelievable that some hairbrained federal authority would even waste one minute trying to prosecute these guys for doing the job they apparently could not handle themselves!
May 9, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Thank God those guys freed the baby seal. At least they can live with themselves. Those who have no mercy will receive none.
This seal controversy in La Jolla is out of hand. The only time I go to La Jolla is with out-of-state visitors, to see the seals. Then we go to lunch in a La Jolla restaurant. Without the seals, it is just another ‘burb that happens to have a coastline -in California- big deal.
May 9, 2008 at 8:31 pm
You didn’t print my last comment so here it is again. I knew it was going to be done that night by someone stronger than I. The rescue is to be applauded and the hero(s) rewarded. If bail or other support is needed count on me to help. Thank God we have people in this country that still believe in the sanctity of life whether it be human or animal.
May 9, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Part of my comment is to suggest that everyone ignore the annoying comments posted by
“sealsuck”. The guy is posting stuff to bug people and the best policy is to just ignore him and not respond. Secondly, the law should be changed in order to address situations like what just happened; specifically something caused by man that causes harm or potentially death to a mammal. That way, SeaWorld or another professional group would be able to intervene immediately. I do appreciate these two men caring enough to give the seal a chance for llife.
May 9, 2008 at 11:40 pm
I think it is a conterdiction for the orginization thats trying to punish the two men
for saving the seal, they want the seals to remain safe, and unharmed, ok that’s a
given, what if a human was laying in an protected place and got hurt and was
laying there dieing, what? he should be left there to die, cause it’s against the law
to enter the area, come on.
May 9, 2008 at 11:45 pm
You got that right, hopefully there will be more people like you and I that will be willing to
help out the two men with bail, like I said, if it were a human, would we just leave them
there to possiably die.
May 9, 2008 at 11:51 pm
This is if you have any children(sounds like you don’t) if one of your children walked into
a protected area and got badlie hurt and needed attention or would die with out it, would
you cross the line to get your child or say(oh well you shouldn’t have crossed the line)
walk away and leave the child there to die?
May 9, 2008 at 11:55 pm
REFFER TO THE COMMENT I LEFT ON #22
May 10, 2008 at 3:36 am
Good to see gov. having a comitee meeting to determine a course of action, when the solution took two non gov. employees maybe 30 min. to solve. Nothing changes.
May 10, 2008 at 5:25 am
Use common sense in this situation. Two men did what was the best and humane thing to do under the circumstances. The law is intended to protect the seals. However, in this case, the law was getting in the way of doing the right thing. These two men did “the right thing”. Common sense dictates that these two men should be congratulated and not punished!
May 10, 2008 at 5:49 am
The laws are put into place for a reason. There is also a thing called common sense. Many people seem to be missing that trait these days. I think anyone will agree with me that these individuals were not going down into the “protected area” to hurt the seal, they were helping it. If there is justice, the men who helped this animal will get a letter of accommodation, not a fine.

May 10, 2008 at 9:32 am
Sea World should have been out there and taken care of that seal asap. But they did not. Instead the media repeatedly reported this little seal strugging. A couple of guys stepped up from the public and did the right thing. THANKS GUYS for doing the right thing! Meanwhile the media blankly reports the rescue and asks should they fined.
May 10, 2008 at 11:02 am
Those two men are heroes. The government should be spending their time and money on prosecuting child molesters, murders, rapists, drug dealers and the more violent criminals. Not two people who did what the government couldn’t. This is just another example of how tax money is wasted on absolutely ridiculous things. Instead of saving the seal when they first noticed it wrapped in the net, days were wasted trying to “figure out” what to do. Now more money will be wasted investigating these two men, whose only “crime” was saving the life of a baby seal. How many days did we have to see that poor seal in the news before someone went to its aide? If only more people were like these men, this country would be a much better place. I live on the other side of the country but I’ve been watching this story all along. Thanks for taking action and having the guts to do what others couldn’t. YOU GUYS ARE TERRIFIC AND YOUR FAMILIES SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!
May 10, 2008 at 11:07 am
THESE CREATURES ARE NOT DELICATE !!! THEY LIVE IN THE OCEAN WITH SHARKS, FOR PETE’S SAKE !!!
“The federal marine agency had been working with SeaWorld to come to the animal’s aid and had a well-practiced plan of action in the works… ”
— JUST LIKE THE GOVT: CALL IN EVERYBODY BUT THE COAST GUARD TO TAKE CARE OF A SMALL ISSUE, WHEN TWO GUYS WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS DO THE JOB IN 10 MINUTES. THE GOVT IS PISSED BECAUSE THESE TWO GUYS MADE THEM LOOK AS INEPT AS THEY ARE !
May 10, 2008 at 11:31 am
“All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke
Those 2 men are heroes and should be applauded for their selfless act of kindness towards one of Gods creatures.
May 10, 2008 at 3:46 pm
I was upset that Seaworld did not want to help the pup . That law needs to be revised . Those 2 men deserve a medal , not an investigation !! If I would have had the smart idea of playing seal to save the pup I would have done it . To leave a pup there and watch it die is cruelty to animals . That is against the law too , is’nt it ?
Well done !

May 10, 2008 at 5:26 pm
This is obviously a case of the government run amok. The Feds say that the novices that rescued the pup endangered its life but since the ‘experts’ wern’t doing anything about it
the novices were all that was left.
It was inhumane of the Government to let this pup suffer because of some arcane letter of the law that was obviously wrong in this case.
At least these two compassionate men decided to do the right thing when the Feds refused to and it is typical of the Government to now try to punish them since they showed the Feds to be incompetent in dealing with the problem.
May 10, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Kudos to these two men who stepped in to help the entangled seal. It was human carelessness that led to the harm. It is our responsibility to make the situation right again. This is simply common sense. If the government is so worried about humans impacting wildlife there are a WHOLE lot of other issues that are more pressing than whether or not these men should have ‘interefered’ to help a wild seal. Um….global warming, oil spills, etc.
May 12, 2008 at 7:10 am
It is so ridiculous that the FBI will be investigating this issue. There is nothing natural about a baby seal being strangled by human-made fishing nets. I applaude these humanitarians for saving this creature. Their deed was based on compassion and the need to address a serious situation that the government - once again - failed to address.
May 13, 2008 at 9:14 am
Should those men have saved a seal pup entangled in a fishing net? Well DU-UH! Apparently Steve Eddy and the other gentlemen were raised by the Golden Rule.
I grew up with Steve Eddy in Manhattan Beach and know what kind parents he had. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone were not only cheering for the welfare of others, but also actually taking action like these men did? Bravo, guys!
May 14, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I am encourage that there are people left that have the decency to help that seal pup despite the threats of criminal charges. We live in a society that tries to make us fear doing the right thing and following our natural inclination to help.
As for Mr Cordaro, he needs to remember that he is our public servant and his organization is supposed to be here to help. Stop making threats.
May 14, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I’m so so so glad that two men decided to come up with a plan to save the seal. I understand that there are laws for a reason but I believe that when it comes to certain situations the laws aren’t always right! I think it’s great that the seals are protected, but at the same time when the whole city sits back and just observes this helpless seal suffer from a man made product… it just sickens me. So I’m all about supporting the two guys who were so very brave. Oh yeah, and Mr. Cordaro stop being so sealy
May 15, 2008 at 2:02 am
It is no wonder the country is in the current state it’s in with the unemployment rate being what it is, the economy in shambles and this agency governing seal beach wasting valuable and expensive resources for something that could have been so simple. Those seals have been there as long as I can remember and it is so awesome to see them! Whatever yahoo is investigating those who freed that poor seal do something productive and worth our hard earned tax dollars. And as for sealsuck, do you work for the government, seems you’d be qualified!
May 15, 2008 at 7:59 am
This poor seal was trapped in a product made by man, left by man … there is no reason we should now ignore the consequences of “our” selfishness by thinking nothing else but us matters. Animals suffering because of our waste or irresponsible actions should not be ignored.
May 15, 2008 at 9:26 am
These guys did the right thing by saving the seal. I would have done the same. Doesn’t the federal government have anything else to do. The government and several agencies said they were going to help, but took their sweet time about it. They probably sent it out to bid and were waiting to see who submitted the lowest bid to save the seal. They could care less about that seal. Just seems to me that government personnel should find something more productive to do with themselves, like, get a life.
May 15, 2008 at 10:22 am
Give these guys a medal! Isnt that what real heros do? Risk everything to save a life?? They are real heros to me and I think they ROCK!
May 15, 2008 at 10:23 am
I feel that it was our fault (human’s) that the seal pup got raveled up in the netting, so naturally, someone should have gotten it untangled. They done the right thing, and they should not be prosecuted.
May 15, 2008 at 10:55 am
i was ready to hop a plane from long island to do what these two awesome men did! thank you to these wonderful people….and i hope that the powers that be give them a medal, not an investigation!
May 15, 2008 at 11:51 am
Federal law — bull!!!! There is such a thing as doing what is right. These men did the right thing. If it were a human, it would be helped immediately. So why not a baby seal? There is absolutely no difference between a human or animal when it comes to aiding anything that is in need, esp. a helpless baby animal. I would gladly go to jail to be able to help anything in need! I know it would be the right thing to do.
May 15, 2008 at 12:04 pm
This incident is a perfect example of what is wrong with this country. We waste precious time, money and energy and cost countless lives discussing and debating and voting and re-voting and getting outside opinions and waiting ‘to see’ and making excuses and asking what if…instead of DOING WHAT IS RIGHT. This was not hard. It was a NO BRAINER. How much money will be spent, time will be wasted and other lives cost deciding if they will be prosecuted…
May 16, 2008 at 10:49 am
My wife an I were on vacation from Wisconsin and visited the beach in La Jolla where the seal was struggling. A crowd of about 100 were there, horrified and frustrated that no one would be doing anything. There was a display just 50 yards up the path for a seal protection advocacy group, but it seems they were only empowered to sell tee shirts and collect donations while the seal was slowly being strangled on the beach just below. They claimed they called seaworld but there was no interest by them to come out and rescue the seal. I guess the show must go on at the seaworld circus. I saw a few days later on the tv in my hotel room that a couple of ‘heroes’ came to the seals rescue but were arrested for saving its life. Hooray for them. I suspect their arrest was really a reaction to the embarrassment caused to those who are really responsible who didn’t doing anything about it. When I show my vacation pictures of the entangled seal and tell the story it sure makes the authorities in the San Diego area look foolish. I guess all these protection groups are only interested in collecting donations to fund lawyers who introduce an occassional seal protection law. But from what I witnessed, no one from any of these groups will actually save a seal. Hooray for the ‘American heros’ who freed the seal and shame on the authorities who persecuted them.
July 28, 2008 at 9:05 pm
If humans are responsible for their suffering, then we should be able to undue the human interference. These animals were here way before we were and they are lucky we have given them this little “rookery” to survive in. The people that think that the seals should be scared off are off their rocker. There is plenty of beach left to be exploited by us destructive humans.
