Show me the money!

Submitted by Aimee, 10News intern.

Here at 10News we have several departments working as a whole to keep the station a smooth running machine. Just like a cell, each department contributes its own individual strength all working towards one common goal — Growth. Being an intern here at 10News, I was eager to see the inner workings of sales. Luckily, I got the opportunity to use my own personal microscope and magnify the sales department.

The typical stereotype of someone in sales might usually include the idea of business deals made over a golf course, power point presentations, and easy money. By taking a deeper look at what really occurs in a sales setting, the stereotype was easily shattered. While sitting down with Carrie Williams one of 10News’ Account Executives, she informed me that sales is truly about customer satisfaction and assuring advertisers that their product is in good hands at our station. Someone in sales must take this idea and multiply it to a higher degree. Carrie revealed that, “You must have a drive to succeed and the ability to take rejection”…the latter a lot more difficult. Life in sales is almost like an archeological dig — You have to sift through all possible advertisers to find the right one that will benefit from our audience.

Just like most things in today’s world, the sales department is constantly undergoing change. With new technology coming out almost every millisecond, there are always new ways to advertise. The sales department has their finger on that pulse seeking any and all new opportunities to expand their outreach. Even the types of advertisers have evolved. Carrie said that aside from the usual home improvement stores and weight loss centers, her most interesting account is from a cremation company. She also filled me in on the fact that the economy plays a major role in sales as well. With money and gas prices being the forefront of many personal woes, you won’t see advertisements for mega gas guzzling trucks and RV’s…it’s just not logical.

Overall, the sales department consists of really hardworking individuals who believe in the success of our station. Dedicating themselves to the happiness of our clients and continuing to find new technology outlets. The sales department at 10News really is the powerhouse of our television station cell.

A Saturday To Remember

Submitted by Carol LeBeau, 10News Anchor.

One of the “perks” of being a 10News anchor is having the opportunity to be part of the many non-profit organizations that really define who we are as a community. Last weekend I had one of those opportunities as emcee of The “Haute with Heart” event in San Diego.

More than 750 men and women descended on the Sheraton Harbor Island for a delicious luncheon, lively auction (featuring the incomparable Steve Hammon) and a spectacular fashion show, compliments of Leonard Simpson and “Fashion Forward.” But Saturday’s “Haute with Heart” annual fundraising luncheon was more than a reason to get dressed up and enjoy lunch and the latest fall fashions. It was one of the most incredible days of inspiration I’ve ever experienced.

“Haute with Heart” raises funds every year for one of San Diego County’s treasures… St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. For more than 42 years, the Center in El Cajon has helped people with developmental disabilities, their families and our community. We all need a place to belong… where our talents and skills are nurtured and encouraged… where we can make friends… do good work… and find that our lives have meaning and purpose. For more than 280 developmentally disabled adults, that place is St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center.

Saturday, we got to meet many of the students at St. Madeleine Sophie’s. Many took to the runway modeling the latest in Tommy Bahama Hawaiian fashion. In honor of the summer Olympics, members of the “Triton” Swim Team at St. Madeleine’s were introduced with their coaches to the dramatic beat of the Olympic theme. Performers from St. Madeleine’s Arts Program took the stage and delighted us with an amazing rendition of the Beatles’ “Imagine.” In keeping with the “imaginings” theme, the room went silent as a video played showing a montage of triumphant moments experienced by several men and women with developmental disabilities. The music backdrop was Bart Millard’s popular inspirational Christian anthem, “I Can Only Imagine.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

And as this incredible event washed over me, I felt God must be at work blessing the efforts of those who support St. Madeleine’s Sophie. The Center has been quietly serving the developmentally disabled in our community for decades, largely under the radar, working quietly without much attention.

Well, last spring St. Madeleine’s Sophie won some much deserved acclaim. From a field of 80 local non-profit agencies, The Center was named the winner of “Oprah’s Big Give-San Diego” by10News and ABC. But the cash award was just the beginning. As a result of Oprah’s gift and television profile, thousands of San Diegans have learned about the important work going on at St. Madeleine’s. And last Saturday, despite a down economy, more than 750 people gathered to raise even more funds for the Center… nearly 400 more than last year!

Some might call that a miracle. And maybe it was. But I believe God’s work is being done at SMSC’s 5-acre campus in the foothills of El Cajon and perhaps He thought a blessing was in order!

If you’d like to know more or become part of the miracles happening every day at St. Madeleine Sophie’s, stop by or call for a tour anytime at 619-442-5129 or go to their web site.

The More Things Change…

Submitted by Hal Clement, 10News Anchor.

Since I’ve been been in this TV news business for a while, people sometimes ask me, “Have things changed much over the years?” Let me see….how do I answer this appropriately? Let’s just say YES!

When I started, we shot film. Film had to be developed, which took some time. Then film had to be edited…meaning literally chopped into sections and glued together with what was called “film cement.” Since I did some film editing, every necktie I owned had little splatters of film cement on it. It was hard to get out. And despite my best efforts, sometimes those splices in the film broke on the air. It was no fun to be narrating a film story, and suddenly…whoops…film break…back to the studio. I did sports back then, and it was much better to show film of the Padres playing than to try and describe it without any film.

Then…voila….videotape came along. Sharper, cleaner, didn’t have to be processed, and it didn’t break. The next big step…..we could go LIVE from different locations! That was the biggest breakthrough and continues to be a staple of TV at every level. So the technology has improved dramatically over the years.

Is the business still stressful? Sure. Does it sometimes seem as if everything is happening at once? Yes. That doesn’t change. Neither does the effort and commitment of the people I work with. You expect us to bring you the best news coverage we can. We expect that of ourselves as well… always have, always will.

Technology is great, but my co-workers make the job what it is — a pleasure every day. So I guess, as the old saying goes, the more things change… the more they stay the same.

There really is no “I” in “I-Team”

Submitted by Lauren Reynolds, 10News Reporter.

Before my husband and I arrived at the La Costa Resort & Spa for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter Emmy Awards, he asked, “How many Emmys do you have to win tonight to come away happy?”

I thought about it, and told him four. I was nominated in 7 categories, and I figured winning 7 out of 7 would be totally unrealistic. I was totally surprised and thrilled that night to win 6! To put it in perspective, I’ve worked for 10 News for the past 12 years, and had earned 3 Emmys during the first 11 of those years. To win 6 for my work over the last year alone shows that we’re doing something right.

I say “we”, because I work with the I-Team, a group of 9 dedicated producers, researchers, and reporters who have the privilege of doing “investigative” journalism, under the direction of Managing Editor JW August. He’s a true pro, with 3 decades in the news business.

The I-Team is a privilege because so many stations have cut investigative stories to improve the bottom line. Investigations take time, money, and resources. They get much more attention before air than what’s called a “daily” news story, something shot, written, and edited all in one day. While major networks still conduct investigations, many local stations have abandoned investigative teams in the face of shrinking advertising revenue and profits. 10News has bucked that trend, putting more resources into investigations over the last 2 years.

Our investigative pieces take months to produce, with good reason. We start with a complaint, or an idea, then track the details and look for the “bad guys”, if there are any. When people ask what I do for a living, I often joke and say, “I chase bad guys,” because we shine a light on suspected crooks or swindlers who take advantage of people for financial gain. Several times in the past year those suspected bad guys have run away from us, literally. Exposure is not good for their businesses.

On Emmy night, the various members of the I-team took home more than 20 Emmy’s, including one for creating a documentary program based on our best stories from last year.

The subjects of the stories I earned Emmy’s for last year include exposing controversial and allegedly “fake” Nelson Mandela Art being sold in La Jolla, an investigation into the deadly early years of Sea World’s attempts to trap and keep killer whales, plus a story about an Orange County woman who was driving without a license, hitting and injuring people, without facing any real consequences. Those are just a few examples. With several projects in the works right now, I hope to earn at least as many Emmy’s next year.

Being On-Air and Pregnant

Submitted by Evy Ramos, 10News Anchor/Reporter/Digital Correspondent

First of all I have to say I LOVE MORNING NEWS!! It has always been my favorite format, and the hours, 4am-12:30pm, may seem daunting to some but I enjoy them. I get home by 1pm and have the entire day to get things done. Sure I have to be in bed between 6 and 7pm, but it’s all worth it.

That having been said, being pregnant definitely throws everything off. Not necessarily in a bad way, but things are definitely changing. It is exciting to see my belly grow, to feel my baby kick, and to see my husband’s expression when he too can feel the baby. But as I face 10 more weeks, I am really getting tired! I can’t sleep through the night, and when my alarm goes off at 2:40am it is getting more difficult to wake up. As long as I can pull myself into the shower, I know I can make it, but getting there is the challenge.

I occasionally get text messages in the morning from my loving husband with encouraging words like, ”You’re doing a great job!” or “You look beautiful this morning.” Just this week I heard my phone ring and I knew I had a text waiting for me. I expected to find a supportive text from my husband. “We are going to have to get you some new clothes today!” What? So I no longer look beautiful… am I not doing a good job? I know this is not what he meant, but yes, it is becoming clear. I am wearing the same clothes over and over. But that’s because I don’t FIT in anything anymore. I can’t help that I am carrying a basketball underneath my clothes! So I did what any pregnant woman would do. I went shopping! We are trying to save money, so I have done a good job of buying things on sale and not going crazy. It felt good walking into Motherhood Maternity and trying on some new tops.

This morning I heard my phone ring, and I knew I had a text waiting for me. Of course it was my husband, “You look so good! Is that one of the shirts you bought?” I know, I know, looks aren’t everything. But when your 25 pounds heavier, tired, emotional, and suffer from bad heartburn, those words mean the world to a woman!

It’s all about a connection…

Submitted by 10News Acting News Director, Sean Kennedy.

Breaking news, spot news, investigative stories, health news, consumer news, weather, sports…  That’s what we do at 10News. Of course we do, but the other stations in San Diego do, too. Some less, some more.  What’s different at 10News?  It’s the connection — a connection to each other and a connection to community.

The 10News team is a family.  I know it’s corny to say, but it’s true.  What you see of Carol, Kim, Hal, Steve, Loren, Bill, you name the person, that’s what you get.  Actually they may be nicer and more approachable and more caring in person than the people you welcome into your living rooms via a box of electronics, nuts and bolts.  Beyond the folks you see on TV, there are dozens of folks behind the scenes.  They shape what we do and how we serve San Diego every day.  I wish you could meet all of them.  Over my 20 year career I have never worked with a more caring, committed, passionate group of people.  All of that comes from their drive to serve you and everyone in San Diego with their very best every day.  Over the next few weeks and months, I’d like to introduce you to at least a few of them.

I want to start with one of our photojournalists.  In the spirit of full disclosure, you won’t read anything here, that he has not heard from me directly.  Additionally, he was not allowed to proof this or edit this post.  He can post a response if he wants.  To protect privacy, I did clear with this photojournalist that I wrote about him and the subject.

Off the top of my head, I can’t recall exactly how long David Villegas has been at 10News.  Trust me it’s a LONG time in a profession that is not terribly kind or forgiving of the meek and mild.  David himself can seem not terribly kind or forgiving at times too (same for me).  As you might expect, David and I have had our share of run-ins.  David is good people.  One thing David and I have come to agree on is the passion he brings to what he does.  David will go to extremes to make sure we provide the best coverage for San Diegans.  One of those extremes includes climbing buildings like the US Grant and The Westgate Hotels in downtown.  All of it in an effort to ensure 10News can provide live coverage of the two front runners in San Diego’s recent mayor’s race.

There are other examples I can offer up too, but that’s just part of really knowing David Villegas.  It’s a big part yes, but this past Monday David came into my office rather abruptly shutting the door behind him.  I figured he was here for a rant or idea, but it was neither.  I wish it had been.  David shared with me that the cancer is back.  My heart sank.  My blood ran cold.  David’s wife Maria has fought a long tough battle with cancer.  Now it’s back.  It’s back in the liver again.  It’s back, and that means chemo again.  I thought I knew David Villegas.  To an extent I did, but not like I do now

Those who know us both and have some history with our relationship may be shocked to read this next statement.  David Villegas is one of the most positive people I know.  While I choked up, David remained strong and resolved.  I won’t forget his words.  “Don’t worry,” David said.  “We’re not worried.  We caught it early, and my wife is a strong woman,” he explained. After a few minutes, our conversation went to the television networks planned project planned for September to shed a light on cancer detection and research.  David and I, both touched personally by cancer, vowed the day the network program was announced that we, through 10News and Azteca America San Diego 15 and their websites, were going to make the most of that opportunity to profile and spotlight local cancer research and programs for treatment and detection.  We renewed that vow during our talk Monday.  David summed it up saying, “you know Sean, my wife and your mom are lucky.  They have means and resources.  Think about the people who don’t.  How do we help them?”

That’s the connection Photojournalist David Villegas brings to you and all of San Diego!

And the Emmy goes to…

Submitted by Leila Niehuser, 10News Promotions Producer

It’s time for the Emmy award ceremony. Last year I entered one promotional spot and had no expectations of receiving an award but to my surprise, I walked away with a statue. It was a really fun and exciting experience.

This year a promotional campaign I produced/wrote is up for an Emmy (thanks to the awesome work of Steve Lyew the Art Director). We are hoping for the best. I have to tell you once you win one… you really want to win another one!!

It’s up to each employee to submit their work for consideration. There isn’t anyone watching out for the really great stuff — we have to take a leap and select what we think is our best work. There’s also a submission fee for each entry. I guess it serves as a deterrent otherwise people would enter everything under the sun and just hope something gets picked!

I remember thinking last year it would be my spot against all the rest - may the best one win. But in any category everyone can win, no one can win or any combination in between. Entries are judged individually not against other entries.

I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope I’m as lucky as last year!

Good News Graduates!

Submitted by David Gonzalez, 10News Promotions Producer.

If I were to give a commencement speech I would start by asking the graduates “What happened in the news today?” If this were a high school graduation I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t get a response. Which would make me wonder, how are these graduates going to get anywhere if they don’t know what’s going on around them right now? I would ask them to dig into their pockets, pull out their cell phones, and look at how much power they have right in their own hands just waiting to be discovered. And given the fact it’s the graduates’ day I would remind them how they’re making news by graduating. And there’s so much good news they can start making just by getting informed.
