The Line-up on Baseball’s Spring Training

If you’re like me, baseball season can’t get here fast enough. The Padres open at home this year, on March 31st against the Houston Astros—but why wait that long?  Peoria, Arizona is just a 5 and half to 6 hour drive from most parts of San Diego, and Spring Training is the best time of the year to see Major League Baseball stars up close.

There are games everyday at the Peoria Sports Complex (either the Padres or Mariners), the sun is almost always shining, tickets are cheap, and if you’re an autograph hound, players will usually sign until they get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. But the best part of Spring Training in Arizona might be the nightlife. Dozens of high-quality chain restaurants dot the Peoria landscape, and every night during the month of March, they’re packed with people who love baseball. Grab a seat in the bar, order a beer and a plate of nachos, and then debate the upcoming season with a fan from Milwaukee, a beat writer from Kansas City, and a TV photographer from Seattle. You’ll probably even spot a player or two.

There’s a popular bar out behind the Padres minor league fields…it used to be called The Monastery, but now I hear it’s been renamed The Salty Senorita. A few years back, they had some ping-pong tables set up in their outdoor patio, and I played table tennis with Bruce Bochy.

Hotel rooms can be a little tough to come by in March, but if you’re willing to stay a few miles out of town, check for rooms in Glendale or some of the surrounding communites. Otherwise, plan early, and make weekend reservations for Spring Training 2009 about the time this year’s World Series is wrapping up.
