Catch March Madness!

Submitted by Ben Higgins, 10News Sports Anchor

Like so many of us, it seems like I’ve been sick all winter. Sore throat, runny nose, cough…and then it starts all over again. But there’s one disease I don’t mind catching this time of year…March Madness. And thanks to the USD Toreros, there could be an epidemic running through the city over the next couple of weeks.

College basketball has been on the rise in our community for the last 6 or 7 years, but it’s even better when one of your teams makes an unexpected run to the NCAA Tournament, which is exactly what the University of San Diego did. Stunning wins over West Coast Conference powers St. Mary’s and Gonzaga on back-to-back nights (including Sunday’s come-from-behind thriller over the Gaels) means USD knows its name will get called on Selection Sunday. The Toreros will face an even tougher test once the “Big Dance” begins. ESPN’s “expert” says USD will be a #15 seed and play a team like Kansas in the 1st round. I don’t think that’s giving the Toreros enough credit. After all, they beat Kentucky on the road in December, topped Gonzaga on Monday, and beat a very good St. Mary’s team twice. I’d like to see USD get a 13-seed. Still a tough task, but there’s at least a chance for an upset.

My last trip to the NCAA Tournament came a couple of years ago when the Aztecs took on Indiana in a 1st round game in Salt Lake City. You probably remember it well—San Diego State has the Hoosiers beat with less than two minutes to go, and they let the game slip away. I was already gearing up for 2 more days in snowy Utah and a winnable second-round game against Gonzaga. That was a tough day for fans of the Red and Black. Who knows…maybe the Aztecs will make a run in the Mountain West Tournament and join the Toreros in this year’s tourney. If that happens, watch out—we might have to quarantine the whole city because of a rampant outbreak of March Madness.

The Line-up on Baseball’s Spring Training

If you’re like me, baseball season can’t get here fast enough. The Padres open at home this year, on March 31st against the Houston Astros—but why wait that long?  Peoria, Arizona is just a 5 and half to 6 hour drive from most parts of San Diego, and Spring Training is the best time of the year to see Major League Baseball stars up close.

There are games everyday at the Peoria Sports Complex (either the Padres or Mariners), the sun is almost always shining, tickets are cheap, and if you’re an autograph hound, players will usually sign until they get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. But the best part of Spring Training in Arizona might be the nightlife. Dozens of high-quality chain restaurants dot the Peoria landscape, and every night during the month of March, they’re packed with people who love baseball. Grab a seat in the bar, order a beer and a plate of nachos, and then debate the upcoming season with a fan from Milwaukee, a beat writer from Kansas City, and a TV photographer from Seattle. You’ll probably even spot a player or two.

There’s a popular bar out behind the Padres minor league fields…it used to be called The Monastery, but now I hear it’s been renamed The Salty Senorita. A few years back, they had some ping-pong tables set up in their outdoor patio, and I played table tennis with Bruce Bochy.

Hotel rooms can be a little tough to come by in March, but if you’re willing to stay a few miles out of town, check for rooms in Glendale or some of the surrounding communites. Otherwise, plan early, and make weekend reservations for Spring Training 2009 about the time this year’s World Series is wrapping up.

Intern’s perspective of 10News

People might wonder what it would be like to be an intern at a large station, such as KGTV… From an insider’s perspective it is the perfect opportunity to gain first hand experience in this industry, before venturing into the scary “real world.”

From the first time ever entering the chaotic newsroom, to dealing with the copy machine, every day here has been a new, exciting experience. While at KGTV, we have had the chance to sit on a live newscast, as well as watch the production side of what goes on. One of our main responsibilities is the 10News Leadership Award. On a daily basis, we are involved with the Leadership Award process. After receiving a nomination, we conduct research on the nominee or group nominated, set up the shoot, create press releases and even get the chance to follow KGTV News Anchor, Geni Cavitt, on a weekly basis.

Once on location for the leadership award, we assist Geni with basic camera operations and have the chance to meet exceptional leaders who give back to the San Diego Community. Each shoot is completely different, and gives us the opportunity to venture into the other side of a news program. Our experience at KGTV so far has been memorable and has given us the opportunity to have a hands-on experience from talented professionals.
